Unfortunately, discussions surrounding periods have been labeled as taboo for far too long, hindering progress towards a resolution. This stigma breeds insecurity, loneliness, depression, fear, and anxiety, preventing young girls and women from reaching their full potential.

One of the major challenges we face in tackling period poverty is the lack of data and research on this issue. We urgently need more research and engagement to shed light on the extent of the problem. Similar to other forms of poverty, the lack of access to menstrual products and hygiene facilities can have profound emotional, physical, and mental health effects on individuals. This crisis not only affects women, but it ultimately impacts the entire nation.

In the United States alone, approximately 500 million people lack access to menstrual products and hygiene facilities. Shockingly, 16.9 million menstruating individuals in the US are living in poverty, with two-thirds unable to afford menstrual products in the past year. Alarmingly, half of these individuals have had to choose between buying menstrual products and food.

These statistics are utterly unacceptable.

Moreover, given the global plastic crisis, it is crucial to explore more environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional menstrual products.
